Personal growth is a lifelong journey of self-discovery, resilience and continuous improvement.

It's about becoming more self-aware, and using this to develop new ways of thinking and behaving. It's where you commit to becoming a better version of yourself, for example improving your skills and knowledge in a particular area.

Personal growth is unique to each person, and therefore can be hard to define. In essence, it's the pursuit of personal growth, as described by UKCPD:

Personal Development is the conscious pursuit of personal growth by expanding self-awareness and knowledge and improving personal skills.

Practical Steps for Personal Growth

1. Start with Self-Reflection

– Keep a daily journal to track your thoughts and progress. Morning reflections can help you set intentions for the day.

– Set aside 5 to 10 minutes each evening to reflect on your day. Ask yourself “What did I learn today?” “How did I feel?” “What did I enjoy or find challenging?”

– When you're feeling worried or anxious about something, take a moment to reflect on what's happening, what the triggers may be, and how you can move through the moment.

– Understand yourself on a deeper level through self awareness reflections. Use a journal with prompts to help you identify patterns.

2. Set Goals

– Create SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) or PACT goals (Purposeful, Actionable, Continuous, Trackable).

– Break larger goals into smaller, manageable steps.

– Review and adjust your goals weekly or monthly.

– Track your progress so that you can see that you are moving forward during the times it's hard to spot the change / growth.

3. Develop Healthy Habits

– Start with one small change and build upon it. Habits thrive in the repetition of the action. Commit to the one change for at least a week, then increase the intensity, or add in another habit as well. Brains love patterns and soon adjust.

– Practice the “2-minute rule”: Start tasks by committing to just 2 minutes. Build this time up consistently. 15 minutes is another great time frame, and more often than not you'll work for a lot longer.

– Build a morning and evening routine that sets you up for success. For example, prep the next day by getting your workout gear ready. Or, commit to waking up earlier to journal, prep meals or declutter your space.

– Habit stack to save time and remove resistance. For example, I wrote this blog while on my under desk treadmill!

4. Embrace Learning

– Read for at least 20 minutes daily. Choose a book that supports your goals.

– Listen to a motivating podcast. Mel Robbins is my go-to. Mel discusses a range of things from personal wellbeing to setting and achieving your goals.

– Take online courses to improve a skill or learn a new hobby.

– Ask for constructive feedback from mentors or friends.

– Join a community with likeminded people. I find it incredibly motivating to be surrounded by others with a common goal. It can also be great for accountability!

5. Practice Self-Care

– Prioritise sleep and exercise / movement. Sleep has a huge impact on your health and mental wellness. Movement is key, even if you're limited, gentle movement like yoga can support your overall wellbeing.

– Set boundaries in relationships and work. If you work from home, have a structure. Create a morning and evening routine to mark the start and end of your day. Saying no to what isn't helpful is essential.

– Plan time for activities that will recharge your batteries. Make regular appointments for intentional rest and breaks throughout the week.

– Make time for fun activities. Take a daily walk, spend time doing something fun and relaxing. Keep in touch with friends, connection is vital, especially if you work alone.
