What is Personal Growth?
Personal growth is quite hard to define, but in essence it's about improving yourself across different areas of life. For example, gaining new skills and knowledge, becoming more self-aware, improving your self confidence and developing resilience.
It's the process of improving yourself and your life, so that you can manage more effectively, face challenges and live a more fulfilled and balanced life. For example, you may realise that you've been wholly focused on your career, and as a result you've neglected your personal life. Perhaps you've developed unhealthy habits, and have too little sleep.
Personal growth is where you begin to address these things, and focus on bringing more balance into your life. You may create new healthier habits, learn a new skill like yoga to help with relaxation.
Or, if you're driven by stress, or you're in a high pressure career, taking steps to modify your behaviour through things like therapy or coaching, or choosing to create more time for you, are more examples of personal growth.
It's very personal to your individual situation and preferences, and therefore it look totally different. It's important to recognise this so that you don't judge your own choices, or compare with what others are choosing to do.
“…a process of developing new skills, attitudes, actions, or reactions that can have a positive impact on your life and increase your overall well-being.”
Benefits of Journaling for Personal Growth
Journaling isn't just about writing about what has happened during the day. It's also a great tool for focusing on personal growth through self reflection, processing experiences and exploring emotions.
Journaling can be great if you're looking to improve your self-awareness, your mental health, and achieving those big goals.
Self Awareness
Journaling for personal growth will help you develop greater self awareness. When I trained as a counsellor, weekly reflective journaling was a requirement. At first I didn't understand why, but pretty quickly it was clear how much it helped me.
The weekly journaling task developed my self awareness at a much deeper level. Reflecting on things I learned, discussions in group and my own practice meant that I was able to process things much quicker.
As you explore your experiences, feelings and reactions, you get to know yourself much better. For example, being able to identify things that may trigger an emotional response. It also helped reinforce any teaching from that week which deepened my understanding.
When you increase your self awareness, you gain insights that can help you understand your own behaviour, allowing for growth and change.
Mental Wellness
As per self-awareness, journaling can support you to improve your overall mental wellness. The act of writing down those unhelpful feelings or negative thoughts acts like a release. They get out of your head and onto paper which frees your mind from the constant chatter.
Journaling like this allows you to look more objectively at the emotions your experiencing, and gently process things in a calm and safe space.
As a therapist I encourage my clients to journal, so that they are able to identify any patterns and remove some of the pressure in their minds.
Increasing Creativity
Journaling can also increase or reignite your creativity. You're giving yourself the space to let your thoughts and random ideas move from your head onto paper. It can help with stubborn creative blocks, problem solving, and overwhelm by releasing the pressure of having hundreds of thoughts racing around in your head.
With no pressure to write well, or create a masterpiece in your journal, you're giving your brain the freedom to just unload and go with the flow. It removes any feelings of perfectionism or judgement, because it's your private journal!
Your journal can easily become a beautiful book of potential with all of these golden nuggets and ideas written down!
Achieving Goals
I never understood the power of journaling for achieving goals until I completed my Masters Degree dissertation.
As it was heuristic research, I needed to journal daily, exploring my own thoughts and reactions to the research I was carrying out, as well as recording what I was learning each day.
It helped to keep me focused on what I needed to do next, and acted as a book of ideas, and things that could be included.
If you're working towards goals, journaling can support you to reduce overwhelm as you are creating space in your mind through the act of ‘brain dumping'. It also helps you to gain clarity of your goal, makes it easy to track your progress and process any challenges or setbacks you face along the way.
